Southampton Common

Southampton Common is my local feel good place. An oasis of beauty close to the centre of a busy city. DSC_0083

I had lived in Southampton and visited the Common frequently before I began to really appreciate it. For some years I cycled across the Common at unsociable hours on my way to or from work at Southampton General Hospital. Later on, after my son was born, I spent many hours at the children’s play area and the paddling pool. The Hawthorns, with its education room full of interesting things, was a frequent stop-off point on our way home from his mornings at nursery, and on the rare occasions when we had decent amounts of snow we would go snowballing and sledging on the Common.

However, in the past three or four years I have begun to explore the Common from a different perspective. The journey to discovering it’s beauty began when I decided to take break from the book I was writing and photograph one of the trees that stands just beyond the Hawthorns to make into a card for my husband’s birthday.  From that point onwards things have escalated slowly and I have ventured further and further into enjoying being on the Common with no particular purpose except to appreciate it and take a few photos.

There is always something new to see on the Common: a different angle on something I have seen a hundred times, a corner that I have never discovered before, or a tip off from one of the many friends I have made during my wanderings about something interesting. This website is a collection of the photos I have taken of the Common over the past year or two. Being here, with my camera as a sort of justification for strolling without any particular direction or purpose, gives me a lot of pleasure, and I hope you enjoy rambling around with me.
