The Ornamental Pond

The Ornamental Pond is probably my most frequent haunt on the Common: but I lived in Southampton for at least thirteen years, and visited the Common on numerous occasions, without even knowing that it existed. It first enchanted me by appearing as I rounded a corner whilst walking up from Hill Lane with a  friend, and it has held me captive ever since.  In winter I come here for the delight of beautiful sunrises without early rising. In spring and summer I teeter on the water’s edge watching  the dragonflies and damselflies. These two obsessions, and several others, can be seen on their own pages of this site.

The Heron has been a great favourite of mine since I discovered the Ornamental Pond. I have spent many hours trying to make him want to be photographed, but have never really convinced him to love me or my camera.

Every day is slightly different at the Ornamental Pond: the colours, the reflections and the decisions that the birds make as to whether it will be calm, or buzzing with activity.

On a clear, calm day, the reflections on the Ornamental Pond can be almost perfect.

Autumn is a beautiful time anywhere on the Common, but the Ornamental Pond can be particularly lovely at this time of year.

The path beside the Ornamental Pond is rather attractive, with the weeping willow and reeds. There are plenty of benches along the way too, where I can sit for a while, delete a few photos, and wonder whether it is time to break into my supply of biscuits yet.

There is plenty of bird life on and around the Ornamental Pond

In springtime the annual additions to the Ornamental Pond’s families are eagerly awaited. The swans generally nest on the island, but take their young over to the Boating Lake as soon as possible (the cygnets are great favourites on the Common, and have  a page all of their own), and several families of fabulously fluffy ducklings usually appear (they also have their own page on this site). But the beautifully ugly baby coots steal the show for me every year.

But, like all children, they and the baby moorhens soon grow up.

In autumn and winter the mist often lingers over the Ornamental Pond in the mornings, giving it a beautifully ethereal feel.

The winter mornings are often bright and crisp, and sometimes icy, as you can see on the “Icy Days” page.

Thank you for joining me on my (often perilous, as I am a little clumsy) visits to the Ornamental Pond. I hope you enjoyed your time here with me.
